The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

American Apparel is ridiculous. Absolutely, completely, and famously ridiculous. The clothes are currently a la mode, semi-organic, and altogether hit-or-miss. Half of the clothes are great pieces; soft and durable, interestingly cut, and brilliantly colored. The other half of the clothes are weird, uncomfortable, unflattering, and pretentiously ostentatious.

Love it or hate it, get used to it because American Apparel has changed the way everyone under 35 dresses for the last 2 years and will probably continue to do so for a long time to come.

love,
C.

Born Backwards

So there is this British television show called Skins that I'm absolutely obsessed with. For you Americans and Canadians, think Degrassi but in English accents and with lots of sex. And while every character on the show is rather well dressed, there are two girls that stand out most especially; Cassie (Hannah Murray) and Effy (Kaya Scodelario). Both of them are thin, pale, and absolutely stunning.

Cassie (Hannah Murray)

Effy (Kaya Scodelario):

These two compliment each other. Where Cassie is light and innocent, Effy is dark and wicked. Where Cassie is pure and spacy, Effy is intense, heavy, twisted, and real.

Both are lovely. Both are inspiring. Both are wells of potential just waiting to be tapped.

p.s. Yes, that Indian boy is Dev Patel from the new movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Skins is where he got his start!

The Golden Twenties

In light of my upcoming birthday, today we will look at the wonderful 1920's.

This decade does not get enough attention. And when it does, it's only the flapper's dresses that are
mentioned. This was a decade of boy-cut suits, of pearls and hats, of tanned summering in navy, black, and white. I like the early 20's more when Coco Chanel was just starting up and fashion was influenced by Art Nouveau. Think big costume jewelry pieces, opera gloves and pearls, sloped hats that make a girl tilt her head up to see anything, and long skirts. Unfortunately, there are not too many pictures of the 1920's up on the internet, so here were the few I found of fashion of the 1920's.

Perhaps the best way to capture the spirit of the dress of the 1920's is to look at Erte.

Erte was a Russian artist in Paris in the 1920's. His rendition of the fashion of the time not only shows the style but the ideas, the inspirations behind the styles.
